Snowflake Obsidian
What is Snowflake Obsidian?
Obsidian, a dark volcanic glass, has a smooth, glossy appearance. Snowflake obsidian is a type of black obsidian with white or grayish spots. These spots are called spherulites, and they are composed of needle-shaped cristobalite, a type of quartz.
Snowflake Obsidian’s Healing Properties
Snowflake obsidian is believed to help balance the mind, body, and spirit by holding or placing it on one of the chakras. It is said to have a soothing energy that helps one to understand unhealthy behavioral patterns, foster personal insights, overcome negative feelings and accept guidance that may be available. Obsidian can remove negativity from a space or person with ease.
How is Snowflake Obsidian Formed?
Obsidian is formed when lava cools quickly. When lava cools more slowly, quartz crystals begin to form giving the rock a more textured, “snowflake” appearance. Snowflake obsidian can either form underground, in cracks that the magma seeps into, or above ground in slow-moving, silica-rich lava flows.
History of Snowflake Obsidian
Obsidian has been used since ancient times and has written about as far back as two thousand years ago. It has been mined and used for jewelry and sculptures by many cultures since then. Obsidian is found anywhere that has experienced volcanic eruption with rapid cooling. However, no snowflake obsidian has been found that dates before the Cretaceous period. It is believed that even primitive mankind may have used both snowflake obsidian and obsidian for jewelry, tools and weaponry.
