Lava stone is formed when molten rock erupts form an active volcano and comes in contact with the cool atmosphere of the Earth, which begins to solidify it. This is when stone beads are formed and are commonly seen in the following shapes: round, oval, slices, discs, roundels, teardrops and saucers.

A naturally porous (filled with natural holes and bubbles) stone means they are lightweight and a perfect stone for jewelry that is comfortable to wear. Lava beads occur naturally in three colors, including black, grey and brown. Today, they can be found in an assortment of colors as they often dyed. These stones have a rough texture, which can be quite abrasive, therefore the beads used for jewelry are treated with paraffin wax to make them smooth.
